WHAT IS A SOFTWARE UPDATE SCAM?
An unknown caller claims your computer is in need of a security or software update. To get the update, you must give your software user account ID and password to the caller. You could be asked to key several commands into your computer, which gives someone else control over your device. You could also be asked to buy software online, which gives scammers the chance to steal your credit card or bank account details.
In another variant, the caller, claiming to be from a local telco, will ask you to download a remote software in order to help you resolve an internet issue. Very often, scammers will claim that your internet connection is facing issues and request that you download the remote software in order give them access to your computer.. After gaining access, scammers will ask that you access your bank account from the computer. They will then steal your online banking credentials after you do so.
